To enjoy the facilities of a computer system to their fullest, some reliable connectivity is required. One of the most common and effective methods of achieving this is the Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection. It is used to connect various devices to a computer. Examples of these devices are scanners, printers, external hard drives, smart phones, tablets, cameras and peripherals. Simply known as USB, it is a cross-platform connectivity technology which is supported by majority of the operating systems today. There are various categories of USB. What is the USB 3.1 protocol?

USB 3.1 is a new protocol that succeeds USB 3.0. The new technology is distinguishable thanks to a turquoise blue color on the connectors. USB 3.1 has increased the speed of data transfer to 10Gbps (gigabytes per second). In addition to that, this new protocol makes use of USB Power Delivery 2.0. Thanks to this configuration, USB 3.1 is capable of handling up to 100W of power during use. Moreover, it is fully backward compatible with earlier protocols and connection types.

A USB Type C connector running the 3.1 protocol is known as a usb 3.1 type c connection. It has a collection of new capabilities which make it very powerful for daily computing. Firstly, it has a Power Delivery 2.0 rating. Thus, it can actually charge a full size notebook from 0 to 100% battery capacity in a short period of time. As such, the regular Alternating Current (AC) port that we are accustomed to on notebooks may soon be replaced by the usb 3.1 type c connection. 

Capacity to handle video signals

The USB 3.1 Type C connection has 4 data lanes. This increases its capability to handle multiple formats of data. As a matter of fact, it can carry HDMI video signals and DisplayPort signals at the same time. This makes it even more versatile. This new connection type is definitely designed to replace all other data and charging cables that are available today. 


While it offers the most ideal way to make connections between your computer and other devices or peripherals, this new USB connection type will face a number of challenges before being completely accepted by the consumer market. Firstly, some people may still be confused by the usb c vs usb 3 versions in the market. Also, there are still very many USB 2.0 Type A ports and connections actively being used in the market. Therefore, it will take time for people to adjust and begin to use the new version while the old ones are still fully functional. The impact of this new USB connection technology will be felt more on mobile devices and notebooks than desktop machines. Its strength is portability and versatility. These are two factors which are paramount for mobile computing. Hence, the desktop machines may still utilize the older, still functional USB connection versions despite the presence of USB 3.1 Type C. Despite the challenges facing this new technology, eventually it will catch on and transform computer connectivity for the better.
